English version

Conclusion. The first question when choosing a testing laboratory is whether it can actually perform your work. That question has verifiable answers and need not rest on the laboratory's own description. Accreditation scope is publicly verifiable and sets out the items, methods and standards for which a laboratory is accredited. Equipment can be checked against what the work requires. Personnel experience can be judged from work on comparable products. Method capability can be assessed from actual execution experience. And subcontracting arrangements determine how items the laboratory cannot perform are handled and by whom.

Checking accreditation scope. Accreditation scope is the primary evidence, setting out which products, items and standards the laboratory is accredited for. Check whether your product falls within the scope. Check whether the specific items you need are accredited. Check which standard and edition the accreditation covers. Check that the accreditation is current. And check any stated limitations. Being able to perform and being within scope are different things: a laboratory may be capable of an item that falls outside its accreditation, in which case the report may not be accepted in certain contexts. Confirm not only capability but accreditation coverage.

Checking equipment. Confirm that the specialised equipment the work requires is present. Confirm that range and accuracy cover your measurement needs. Confirm the quantity, which affects scheduling and duration. Confirm calibration status. And confirm supporting facilities including environmental chambers, test areas and simulators. Range coverage is a practical check: equipment may be present while its range or accuracy falls short, leaving the resulting data unable to meet requirements.

Judging experience. Consider experience with comparable products. Consider understanding of the product, meaning whether discussion shows grasp of its characteristics and difficulties. Consider familiarity with the standards and the common problems under them. And consider how problems are handled, meaning whether well-founded suggestions are offered. The depth of understanding in discussion is an effective indicator: a laboratory that proactively identifies common problems with your product on a particular item clearly has practical experience, while one that simply quotes from a list without asking about the product may have limited experience.

Confirming method capability. Consider whether the method is mastered through actual execution experience. Consider method validation for non-standard methods. Consider participation in proficiency testing with satisfactory results. And consider comparability of data with other laboratories. Proficiency testing results are comparatively objective evidence: participating in external comparison exercises with satisfactory results shows that the laboratory's data for that item are comparable with others'.

Understanding subcontracting. Establish which items are performed in-house and which are subcontracted, which should be disclosed. Establish the subcontractor's accreditation, covering who performs the work and whether they are appropriately accredited. Establish how subcontracting is stated in the report. And establish acceptability, since some contexts restrict subcontracting. Ask about subcontracting before commissioning, since it affects duration, cost and report acceptability.

Observing during discussion. Pre-commissioning discussion reveals a good deal. Note the questions asked, and whether they reach the key product information of materials, intended use and target markets. Note the suggestions offered, and whether possible problems and points for attention are raised proactively. Note the explanation of duration, and whether a reasonable estimate with its influencing factors is given. Note how uncertainty is handled, and whether it is acknowledged frankly. And note the basis of the quotation, and whether its composition and possible variations are explained. How uncertainty is handled is worth observing: saying frankly that an item needs checking is more reliable than claiming everything can be done.

Other considerations. Duration against your timing requirements. Cost, matched to capability and service. Location, affecting sample shipping and on-site discussion. Report language, and whether the version you need can be issued. Ongoing support when problems arise. And communication responsiveness day to day. Ongoing support proves its value when something fails: a laboratory providing detailed failure information and technical discussion helps the client's cause analysis considerably.

How we handle it. When approached we establish the product and its purpose first and then judge whether it falls within our capability. Where items lie outside it we say so directly rather than accepting the work and working out how later. We state our accreditation scope explicitly, covering which items fall within it and which do not, since that affects report acceptability in different contexts. Where work involves subcontracting we disclose it in advance so that the client knows and can decide.
