English version

Conclusion. Emergency and transport equipment, including defibrillator monitors, transport ventilators, infusion pumps, suction units and stretchers, operates in conditions entirely unlike hospital equipment. It is used in motion, in ambulances, helicopters and on stretchers, with continuous vibration and shock. Its environment is harsh, outdoors, at temperature extremes, in damp and dust. Its power is unreliable, depending on batteries and on vehicle supplies that fluctuate. Its operating conditions are poor, with inadequate light, confined space and operators working while moving. And time is pressing, with no opportunity to troubleshoot during an emergency. Those conditions set the testing focus: environmental suitability, power reliability, and usability under unfavourable conditions.

Organising the items. Electrical safety covers the general requirements including battery items. Electromagnetic compatibility includes the particular considerations of a vehicle environment. Performance covers the equipment's own function and accuracy. Vibration and shock cover the mechanical environment of transport and use. Temperature covers operating and storage ranges. Humidity and water ingress cover outdoor use. Dust covers dusty environments. Drop covers handling. Battery testing covers endurance, changeover, charging and cold performance. Securement covers fixing within a vehicle. And usability covers operation under unfavourable conditions.

Environmental testing focus. Vibration should follow the transport mode, since road ambulances, helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft have different characteristics; sustained vibration can loosen connections, fatigue components and blur displays. Shock covers vehicle jolts, stretcher handling and equipment placement. Temperature ranges should cover realistic conditions, outdoors in winter and inside a vehicle in summer, with both extremes verified. Temperature cycling covers condensation when moving from cold outdoors into a warm vehicle. Humidity covers rain, snow and damp. Water ingress protection should be rated for realistic rain and splash exposure. Dust covers outdoor and incident scenes. And altitude matters for aeromedical transport, where reduced pressure affects equipment involving fluid paths or pressure measurement. Verifying function during vibration matters more than inspection afterwards: whether the equipment still works, whether the display remains legible and whether alarms remain effective during vibration correspond to actual use, whereas post-vibration inspection reveals nothing about behaviour during it.

Power and batteries. Battery endurance should be measured at actual working intensity rather than in standby. Endurance at low temperature matters, since capacity falls markedly outdoors in winter. Battery changeover between external supply and battery must not interrupt function. Hot swapping, where supported, requires verification of reliability. Charge indication requires accuracy, particularly in estimating remaining time. Charging covers vehicle charging, rapid charging and charging from different supplies. Vehicle supply tolerance matters, since vehicle voltage varies widely. And battery ageing reduces endurance over time, requiring criteria for replacement. Endurance at low temperature is key data for emergency equipment: capacity outdoors in winter can fall well below the nominal figure, and exhausting a battery during an emergency has serious consequences. Measure it and state it in the documentation.

Electromagnetic considerations. The vehicle environment contains several devices, vehicle radios and the vehicle's own electrical system. Communication equipment interference arises because crews use radios and phones at close range. Multiple device coexistence occurs when several medical devices run together. And engine starting transients produce voltage fluctuation. Consider portable communication equipment at close range in immunity assessment, since a radio may be used right beside the equipment at an incident.

Securement and handling. Vehicle securement requires adequate fixing point strength and reliable methods, since unsecured equipment becomes a dangerous projectile in heavy braking or a collision. Stretcher mounting requires a compatible interface. Carrying provisions require handle and strap strength and comfort. Weight affects the carrying burden. Size affects operation in confined spaces. And drop testing covers function and safety after being dropped during handling. Verify vehicle securement strength against crash conditions rather than normal driving vibration alone: equipment breaking loose in a collision is a serious hazard to occupants.

Usability under unfavourable conditions. Display legibility matters in bright light, in darkness and during vibration. Ease of operation matters with gloves, one-handed and in confined space. Alarm perceptibility matters in noisy environments. Key protection must prevent inadvertent activation during handling and movement. And startup speed matters, since the time from switching on to being usable is critical in an emergency. Gloved operation is normal at incidents, and key size, spacing and tactile feedback must all allow for it.

Preparing for submission. Describe the use scenario, whether vehicle, aircraft or outdoors, which informs test conditions. Provide securement methods and interfaces for strength verification. Describe the battery configuration covering capacity, quantity and hot-swap capability. Provide operating modes and power consumption for endurance testing. Prepare accessories including straps, mounting brackets and cables. And state the claimed operating and storage temperature ranges.

How we handle it. For emergency and transport equipment we suggest verifying function during vibration rather than inspecting afterwards, running the equipment on the vibration table and observing function, display and alarms, which corresponds to actual use. On batteries we suggest measuring actual endurance at low temperature, since that figure bears directly on emergency use while ambient endurance says nothing about winter conditions outdoors.
