English version

Conclusion. Whether work can be expedited is a common question, and answering it requires breaking the duration apart. A testing commission's total duration comprises roughly five stages. Acceptance and confirmation covers contract, plan and sample receipt, generally one to three days. Queuing covers waiting for equipment and personnel, depending on current load and ranging from nothing to several weeks. Specimen preparation covers sampling, machining and pre-conditioning, from hours to days. Test execution covers the testing itself, from hours to months. And data processing and reporting covers calculation, review and authorisation, generally two to five days. Expediting compresses queuing, handover and reporting; it cannot compress test execution itself.

How compressible each stage is. Acceptance is highly compressible and can complete the same day where documentation is complete. Queuing is highly compressible through priority scheduling. Specimen preparation is moderately compressible through overtime and parallel preparation. Test execution is barely compressible, though some items can run in parallel. And data and reporting are moderately compressible through priority review. Queuing offers the most scope: during busy periods it may account for more than half the total, and priority scheduling cuts it directly.

Items that cannot be compressed. Some durations are set by physical processes. Fatigue and durability testing is governed by cycle count, and a hundred thousand cycles remain a hundred thousand cycles whatever is paid. Ageing testing has a floor below which acceleration changes the failure mechanism. Stability testing samples at prescribed time points. Biological testing has fixed culture and observation periods. And corrosion testing has exposure times the method prescribes. That accelerated ageing cannot be accelerated without limit deserves understanding: raising the temperature accelerates the process, while too high a temperature introduces failure mechanisms that would not occur in service, leaving the result meaningless.

Arrangements that can run in parallel. Although individual test durations cannot be compressed, items can run alongside one another. Several machines can run at once where enough exist. Several specimens can run at once, with different items on different specimens. Non-destructive items can precede destructive ones on the same specimen. Long-duration items can start first, with others running alongside. And reports can be staged, releasing data for completed items first. Starting long-duration items first is effective: once a durability test is running it runs on its own, other items complete alongside, and the total duration equals the longest single item.

The cost of expediting. Urgency charges reflect the cost of priority resources. Displacement disrupts the laboratory's scheduling for other clients. Error risk rises, since haste increases the chance of mistakes in specimen preparation and data processing. Review time is compressed. And rework risk means that if something goes wrong, the time lost may exceed the time saved. Rising error risk is the hidden cost: a rushed result that must be redone because something was missed takes longer overall.

More effective ways to go faster. These often work better than expediting. Talk early, contacting the laboratory before the samples are even made, to settle the plan and the scheduling. Book slots in advance. Provide complete documentation at once, avoiding rounds of supplementation. Provide enough specimens, avoiding re-submission after a failure. Self-check before submission, avoiding a whole cycle of failure and rework. Submit in stages, sending long-duration items first and short ones later. And accept staged reports, using data from completed items for internal decisions. Talking early and booking generally beats expediting afterwards: two weeks' notice lets scheduling be arranged, while asking for urgency once the samples have arrived leaves much less scope.

Planning the timeline. Work backwards from the deadline to set each stage's date. Identify long-duration items first and schedule them first. Leave margin for rework, at minimum one round of rectification and re-testing. Allow for sample production time, since making the samples takes time too. And allow for shipping time, particularly for products containing batteries. Leaving margin for rework is the point most readily overlooked: most plans assume passing first time, while rectification plus re-testing after a failure frequently exceeds the whole originally planned duration.

How we handle it. When asked to expedite we break the duration apart and explain which stages can be compressed and which cannot, rather than promising or refusing in general terms. We suggest parallel arrangement and early starts on long-duration items first, since neither raises error risk and both often work better than expediting alone. Where expediting is genuinely needed we explain its scope and cost, including charges and effects on other stages, so that clients decide knowing what is involved. And where physical duration cannot be compressed we say so directly rather than promising timing we cannot meet.
