English version

Conclusion. Textile products are numerous among medical devices: surgical gowns, isolation gowns, masks, dressings, bandages, straps, upholstery fabrics and bed linen. Two points govern the selection of performance measures. Measures must correspond to function: barrier products need barrier testing, absorbent products need absorption testing, and supporting products need strength and elasticity testing, rather than measuring tensile strength universally. And data are sensitive to conditions, since textile properties depend strongly on moisture content, temperature, sampling direction and specimen size; without condition control, data are not comparable.

Products and their measures. Surgical and isolation gowns provide barrier and require liquid barrier, microbial barrier, linting and strength. Masks provide filtration and require filtration efficiency and breathing resistance. Dressings manage exudate and require absorption, moisture transmission and adherence. Bandages compress and secure and require tensile properties, recovery and applied pressure. Straps and restraints carry load and require strength, seam strength and retention. Upholstery fabrics protect and provide comfort and require flammability, abrasion resistance, breathability and cleaning tolerance. And bed linen serves hygiene and requires strength, laundering durability and flammability. Linting is a measure specific to products used in surgical environments, since shed fibres are foreign bodies in the surgical field.

Strength measures. Tensile strength and elongation are the basic measures, taken separately in warp and weft directions. Tear strength covers resistance to propagation once a tear starts, mattering for products that may encounter sharp objects. Bursting strength applies to knitted and nonwoven materials. Seam strength matters because seams are the weak point in made-up products. And abrasion resistance covers loss under repeated rubbing. Seam strength is commonly below fabric strength, so overall strength is usually governed by seams, and testing fabric without seams leaves the conclusion incomplete.

Barrier measures. Hydrostatic resistance covers water barrier under pressure. Synthetic blood penetration resistance covers blood barrier at specified pressure. Microbial penetration resistance covers barrier both dry and wet. And particulate filtration efficiency applies to filtering products. Wet microbial barrier is more demanding than dry, since liquid provides a path for penetration and fabrics are frequently wet in real use.

Comfort measures. Air permeability covers the passage of air. Moisture vapour transmission covers the passage of water vapour. Thermal and evaporative resistance together reflect wearing comfort. And softness and handle can be partly quantified from subjective impression. Breathability and barrier pull against one another: materials with good barrier tend not to breathe, and poor breathability means heat and discomfort in wear, reducing compliance over long periods.

Specimen preparation. Textile testing places high demands on specimen preparation. Conditioning at specified temperature and humidity for a specified period is a mandatory step. Sampling location should avoid edges and defects and span different positions. Sampling direction should take warp and weft separately with direction marked. Specimen numbers must be adequate, since textile variability is considerable. Specimen size must follow the method, since size affects results. And finished product rather than fabric should be used where the finished product is being evaluated, including seams and treatments. Omitting conditioning produces noticeably biased data, since textile strength varies with moisture content and the same fabric can measure appreciably differently at different humidities.

Correspondence with use. Consider the relationship between test and service conditions. Consider whether the product is single-use or reusable, since reusable products need laundering durability. Consider the effect of sterilisation on property retention. Consider ageing during storage. And consider the actual loading, meaning whether the test's loading mode represents reality. Laundering durability is critical for reusable textiles: strength, barrier and flammability performance can all decline after repeated washing and disinfection, and performance should be re-measured after a specified number of cycles.

Flammability. Burning behaviour covers what happens after ignition. Durability of flame retardance matters because finish-applied treatments may fail after laundering. Composite specimens of fabric over filling should be used, since fabric alone does not represent the assembly. And re-testing flammability after laundering is necessary for reusable products. Loss of flame retardance after laundering is a real problem, since most flame retardance comes from finishing treatments that deplete through repeated washing.

How we handle it. For textile testing we condition specimens strictly as specified and sample warp and weft separately; without both, data are not comparable. For finished product evaluation we use finished-product specimens including seams and actual processing, since seam strength is generally below fabric strength. For reusable products we suggest re-measuring performance after laundering cycles, barrier and flammability especially, since decline in both after washing is real.
