English version

Conclusion. Medical gas systems deliver oxygen, air, nitrous oxide and vacuum to points of clinical use, through terminal units, quick connectors, hose assemblies, regulators, flowmeters and monitoring and alarm devices. Two safety questions are central. Non-interchangeability, since connectors for different gases must not be interchangeable; connecting nitrous oxide to an oxygen outlet would be catastrophic, and the protection depends on gas-specific mechanical geometry. And gas tightness, since leakage means gas loss, environmental contamination with anaesthetic gases, and reduced performance in vacuum systems. The remaining items covering flow, pressure, materials and cleanliness address function and compatibility.

Focus by product. Terminal units require non-interchangeability, tightness, flow and insertion force. Quick connectors require non-interchangeability, tightness and connection durability. Hose assemblies require tightness, pressure resistance, non-interchangeability and flammability performance. Regulators require pressure accuracy, relief valves and tightness. Flowmeters require flow accuracy and adjustment. Monitoring and alarm devices require pressure monitoring and alarm function. And valves require sealing, operating force and durability.

Verifying non-interchangeability. Geometric specificity must make connectors for different gases geometrically incompatible. Interchangeability testing attempts to connect other gases' connectors and confirms that they cannot mate; this must be measured rather than inferred from drawings. Colour coding follows the specified scheme as an aid to identification. Text marking states the gas name. Non-interchangeability after wear covers whether the specific geometry still prevents mating after repeated connection cycles. And forced connection covers whether a mismatched connector can be forced home with substantial effort. Non-interchangeability after wear is a long-term risk: specificity depends on dimensional fit, and wear changes dimensions so that a combination once impossible may become possible. Repeat interchangeability testing after wear cycling. Forced connection also requires verification: if sufficient force can push a mismatched connector home, the protection is unreliable.

Verifying tightness. Static sealing covers leakage at working pressure. Dynamic sealing covers tightness during connection and disconnection. Pressure resistance covers capacity beyond working pressure. Vacuum sealing differs in requirement from positive pressure. Sealing after durability covers retention after repeated connection and prolonged use. And temperature effects cover sealing across temperatures. Sealing after durability is the practical concern: terminal units are connected many times daily, seals wear and leak, and small leaks go unnoticed while accumulating into wasted gas and environmental contamination.

Flow and pressure. Flow capacity covers delivery at specified pressure. Pressure drop covers loss across the component. Flow accuracy on flowmeters covers deviation between setting and actual. Pressure regulation accuracy on regulators covers output pressure accuracy and stability. Relief valves on regulators cover overpressure release. And the flow-pressure relationship covers behaviour across flows. Pressure drop affects overall system performance: drops accumulate across components in series and may leave insufficient flow at the point of use.

Connection performance. Insertion and withdrawal forces should lie in an appropriate range, since excessive force makes operation laborious and insufficient force permits accidental disconnection. Positive indication of full engagement is needed. Retention force covers resistance to accidental withdrawal. Connection durability cycles to the expected frequency with performance re-measured afterwards. And single-handed operation is often needed clinically. Engagement indication matters: incomplete engagement can leak or disconnect unexpectedly, and the user needs to be able to confirm that it is home.

Materials and cleanliness. Material compatibility with the gas conveyed matters, oxygen especially. Oxygen compatibility places special requirements on materials: those flammable in oxygen-enriched environments cannot be used, and oil or grease contamination is prohibited. Cleanliness covers internal particulate and grease residues. Particulates cover what use generates. Flammability matters particularly for components used in oxygen-enriched environments. And ageing covers seals and hose materials. Grease contamination in oxygen systems is a definite fire risk: grease can ignite spontaneously in high-pressure oxygen, so cleanliness requirements for oxygen components are stringent and both machining and assembly must be controlled.

Examining marking. Gas identification covers name, colour and symbol. Specification marking covers pressure and flow ranges. Direction marking indicates flow. Warnings cover relevant safety information. And marking durability covers legibility after cleaning and prolonged use. Colour coding is an important aid to identification but should not be the principal protection against misconnection: that must rest on mechanical specificity.

How we handle it. For medical gas products, interchangeability testing is an item we always measure, attempting connection with connectors for various gases to confirm that specificity actually works. We also suggest re-testing after wear, repeating interchangeability testing after connection cycling to confirm that wear has not weakened the protection; that corresponds to the product's real state after some years in service. For oxygen components we inspect cleanliness specifically, since grease contamination leads to fire and contamination may arise in machining, assembly or packaging.
