English version

Conclusion. Bonding is common in device manufacture: joining components, fixing labels, sealing joints and retaining inserts. Adhesive quantities are small relative to total product mass, yet the substances they introduce have two characteristics. Their location is particular: adhesive sits at joints, joints frequently communicate with the product surface, and released substances migrate readily into contacting media. And their composition is complex, adhesives typically containing monomers, initiators, solvents, plasticisers and stabilisers, of which unreacted monomer and unevaporated solvent are the principal concerns. Substances introduced by bonding should therefore not be overlooked in material lists and chemical characterisation.

Sources of residue. Unreacted monomer remains where curing is incomplete. Solvent remains where solvent-based adhesives have not fully evaporated. Initiators and their residues come from the curing system. Plasticisers are added for flexibility. Stabilisers and antioxidants are formulation aids. Degradation products arise during curing or ageing. And cleaning agents come from surface preparation before bonding. Unreacted monomer is the principal concern with curing adhesives, since monomers have low molecular weight and migrate readily, and some are irritant or sensitising.

Controlling cure. The degree of cure determines residue directly. Curing conditions cover temperature, time, humidity for moisture-curing systems and light for light-curing systems. Cure uniformity matters, since thick adhesive layers may cure inadequately internally. The substrate may inhibit curing in some combinations. Post-curing covers continued reaction after initial cure. And degree of cure can be assessed through hardness, infrared spectroscopy or thermal analysis. Inadequate internal cure in thick layers is a real problem, particularly with light-curing systems where depths the light cannot reach may remain uncured indefinitely and release monomer continuously. Substrate inhibition occurs in certain combinations where surface substances interfere with the curing reaction.

Solvent evaporation. For solvent-based adhesives, evaporation depends on temperature, time and ventilation. Residues persist in enclosed structures where solvent cannot escape. Absorption occurs where surrounding polymers take up solvent and release it slowly afterwards. Baking processes accelerate removal. And residual solvent can be quantified by testing. Solvent in enclosed structures is easily overlooked: assembly creates a closed space from which solvent cannot evaporate, and it is released into the use environment or contacting medium when the product is opened.

Test methods. Residual monomer is quantified chromatographically. Residual solvent is commonly determined by headspace gas chromatography. Total volatile organic content reflects overall volatile matter. Chemical characterisation analyses substances released after extraction. And degree of cure indirectly reflects residue levels. Specimen condition must be final: fully assembled, fully cured and sterilised. Final-condition specimens matter particularly in bonding work, since curing is a continuing process and residue levels differ at different points in time.

Process responses. Select low-residue systems, whether solvent-free or low in monomer content. Ensure adequate cure through controlled and verified conditions. Add post-processing such as baking or ventilation to accelerate residue removal. Control the quantity applied, since excess increases total residue and thick layers cure poorly. Design the structure to avoid enclosed spaces and facilitate evaporation. And control pretreatment, since cleaning agent residues must also be managed. Controlling quantity is a simple and effective measure: excess adhesive both increases residue and may squeeze out where it should not be.

Relationship to biological evaluation. The material list must include adhesives rather than principal materials alone. Contact determination must consider whether bonded areas contact the body or communicate with contacting media. Chemical characterisation specimens should be complete products rather than isolated material coupons. And change assessment must treat adhesive substitution as a change requiring evaluation. Adhesive substitution is easily treated as minor, whereas a change in adhesive composition may introduce new released substances and belongs in change review.

How we handle it. For chemical characterisation we ask for a complete material list including adhesives, since a list covering only principal materials leads to method selection that misses what adhesives may release. We require final-condition specimens, fully assembled, cured and sterilised, since each of those stages affects residue levels. For products using solvent-based adhesives we suggest adding residual solvent quantification, particularly where the product contains enclosed spaces.
