English version
Conclusion. Testing disinfection and sterilisation equipment runs along two lines. Effectiveness, meaning whether the equipment reliably achieves the claimed sterilisation or disinfection level, which involves realising the process parameters, uniformity of distribution, and accommodation of different loads. And equipment safety, meaning safety during operation, covering pressure, temperature, electrical, mechanical and chemical aspects. Both require verification: verifying effectiveness while neglecting safety exposes operators to risk, and verifying safety while effectiveness is unreliable means sterilisation does not achieve its purpose.
Verifying effectiveness. Temperature distribution, for moist and dry heat, covers uniformity across the chamber and locating cold spots. Parameter accuracy and stability cover control of temperature, pressure, time and concentration. Air removal, for moist heat, covers the vacuum phase, which is the precondition for steam penetration. Penetration covers whether steam or gas reaches all parts of the load. Load accommodation covers effectiveness across loading arrangements and densities. Biological indicator verification confirms actual effectiveness with appropriate indicators. And cycle reproducibility covers consistency across repeated cycles. Locating cold spots is the core action in effectiveness verification, because routine monitoring points belong at the cold spot: conditions met there are met elsewhere.
Pressure-related safety. For pressure sterilisers, pressure vessel strength covers the chamber's pressure resistance. Safety valves cover relief at overpressure, including operating pressure and discharge capacity. Door interlocks prevent the door opening while pressure remains, which is the critical safety device. Door sealing covers seal reliability and durability. Pressure indication and monitoring cover accuracy and reliability. And overpressure protection covers multiple layers of protection. The interlock preventing opening under pressure must be measured: opening a pressurised chamber scalds the operator with hot steam, and the interlock should carry both mechanical and electrical assurance.
Temperature-related safety. Accessible surface temperature covers parts operators may touch. Overtemperature protection covers measures when temperature control fails. Hot load removal covers protection against burns when unloading. Steam and condensate discharge covers safe release. And environmental effects cover the equipment's influence on ambient temperature. Protection during hot load removal deserves attention, since loads remain very hot after a cycle and unloading is a common burn scenario.
Chemical safety. For equipment using chemical sterilants, leak detection covers detection and alarming of sterilant leakage. Ventilation covers concentration control in the working area. Residue removal covers clearing sterilant from the chamber at cycle end. Effluent treatment covers waste gas. Operator exposure covers protection during charging, sampling and maintenance. And containers and pipework require chemical resistance and reliable sealing. Residue at cycle end bears on operator exposure when the door opens: the equipment should run an adequate purge and permit opening only once residues meet the limit.
Control and records. Parameter control accuracy must match claims. Record completeness covers parameters for every cycle. Record traceability covers correspondence with batches. Abnormality records cover logging and indicating abnormal cycles. Printing or export covers how records are output. Tamper resistance prevents records being altered casually. And parameter alarms cover alarming and cycle abortion on deviation. Handling abnormal cycles matters greatly: where parameters fail to reach requirements, the equipment should clearly mark the cycle as failed rather than completing silently and leaving the operator believing sterilisation succeeded.
Self-test and verification support. Power-on self-test covers key functions. Routine test programmes include dedicated procedures such as air removal tests. Verification ports allow independent temperature sensors to be introduced. Calibration covers the method and interval for temperature and pressure sensors. And maintenance prompts indicate when servicing is due. Verification ports help users considerably with periodic verification, since users must periodically confirm parameters with independent sensors and a dedicated port is more reliable than improvising access.
Preparing for submission. Provide process parameters covering the settings of each cycle programme. Describe the load types the equipment suits, which informs effectiveness verification. Provide design documentation for the chamber and pressure components. Describe the chemicals used, where applicable. Provide typical loads, since effectiveness verification needs real loading. And prepare biological indicators for effectiveness verification.
How we handle it. For sterilisation equipment we treat temperature distribution and cold spot location as the foundation of effectiveness verification and suggest performing it with realistic typical loads rather than in an empty chamber alone, since loading strongly affects distribution. On safety, door interlocks and overpressure protection are items we always measure, since both address direct operator risk and presence in a design document is not the same as working in practice.
