English version

Conclusion. Receiving a test result that falls short of expectation naturally prompts objection. How the objection is expressed determines what follows. Ineffective expression says the result is wrong, that the product has never had problems, or that other laboratories passed it; these statements carry no technical content and the laboratory cannot respond specifically. Effective expression says that three samples from the same batch were tested in-house with data in a given range, differing from the laboratory's result by a stated amount, and asks whether the methods differ; this gives specific comparative data and a definite question, and can be pursued. The key to advancing a dispute is reducing the disagreement to specific technical points.

Common sources of dispute. Sample differences, where submitted and self-tested samples come from different batches, call for checking sample identification and batches. Method differences in test conditions or steps call for comparing method details. Mounting differences in restraint and loading points call for checking how specimens were clamped. Equipment differences in range, accuracy and calibration call for checking equipment and calibration. Criteria differences in the clause or edition relied on call for checking standard editions. Calculation differences in formula, units or rounding call for re-checking the calculation. And genuine non-conformance calls for cause analysis and corrective action. Sample differences account for a non-trivial share of disputes: the manufacturer's self-tested samples and the submitted samples come from different batches, and batch-to-batch variation may itself exceed the magnitude in dispute.

Preparing before raising it. Check the samples, comparing batch, quantity and identification between submitted and self-tested material. Compile the self-test data, covering results, method, conditions and equipment in full. Check the standard editions relied on by both parties. Read the report details covering test conditions, method and any stated deviations. And define the question, identifying which datum, how large the difference is and which stage is suspected. Checking standard editions first resolves a portion of disputes: the manufacturer works from an earlier edition while the laboratory applies the current one, and different criteria naturally produce different conclusions.

Steps to advance it. Raise a specific question in writing, with data and basis. The laboratory reviews raw records, calculations and equipment condition. The two sides' engineers compare method and condition details. The point of disagreement is identified, locating the stage that produced the difference. The next step is decided among re-testing, supplementary testing and accepting the conclusion. And a conclusion is recorded in writing covering the discussion and the disposition. Identifying the point of disagreement is the crux: once the stage is located, the handling becomes clear, while without it discussion stays at the level of asserting the result is wrong.

What the laboratory should do. Accept and record the objection formally rather than avoiding it. Review raw records for completeness and calculations for correctness. Review equipment status covering calibration and intermediate checks. Review method execution covering conformity and any deviation. Provide detailed information within the limits confidentiality allows. And reply in writing with the review findings and a technical opinion. Providing detailed test information helps resolve disputes: mounting photographs, loading curves and failure photographs explain more than a single concluding figure.

Considering re-testing. Re-testing presupposes valid retained samples. The choice between retained and newly submitted samples matters, since the two mean different things. Re-testing retained samples verifies measurement repeatability. Re-testing new samples verifies product consistency and cannot overturn the original result. Costs generally fall to the client unless the original measurement is shown to be in error. And where the re-test result differs from the original, further cause analysis is needed. That new samples cannot overturn the original result should be clear: a passing new sample shows only that the new sample passes, while the original sample's non-conformance remains a fact requiring an explanation of batch variation.

Arbitration and third parties. Where the parties cannot agree, commission a third-party laboratory acceptable to both. Or apply for arbitration testing through the prescribed channel. Samples for arbitration require clear provenance and chain of custody. The basis must be settled in advance, covering the standard and method to be applied. And the standing of the result must be agreed in advance. Arbitration costs both money and time, so thorough technical discussion first is worthwhile, and most disputes can be resolved technically.

Attitude in a dispute. For the client, raising specific technical questions is more effective than questioning motives. For the laboratory, reviewing conscientiously is more valuable than rushing to defend the conclusion. And the shared goal is finding the true cause of the difference, which serves both parties. Finding the true cause matters more than who was right: if the difference is methodological, both sides learn; if it is a product problem, finding it early beats finding it late.

How we handle it. On receiving an objection we accept it formally and review raw records, equipment status and method execution, replying in writing with our findings. We provide test information in as much detail as we can, covering mounting, loading curves and photographs of failure location and mode, since those details are often where the disagreement lies. Where the review finds the fault is ours we acknowledge it and put it right, including re-testing and correcting the report; where the review confirms the original result we explain the basis and work through with the client why the self-test data differ.
