English version
Conclusion. An injection moulded part continues to change dimensionally after ejection: moulding shrinkage is not complete, internal stress relaxes gradually, the material absorbs or loses moisture, and temperature acts on it in service. Dimensions measured immediately after ejection therefore differ from those days or months later. For components requiring close fits this is a real problem: a fit that is correct at assembly may tighten or loosen after storage, or distortion during storage may prevent assembly altogether.
Sources of dimensional change. Moulding shrinkage continues for hours to days after ejection as cooling proceeds. Post-shrinkage occurs over days to weeks through crystallisation or stress relaxation. Internal stress release produces gradual distortion over weeks to months. Moisture absorption or loss changes dimensions with moisture content as the environment changes. Thermal expansion changes dimensions immediately with temperature and is reversible. Creep occurs under sustained load and is not reversible. And ageing brings dimensional change alongside material degradation over the long term. Moisture-related dimensional change is pronounced in some materials, where changes in moisture content produce appreciable dimensional change; since moisture content follows ambient humidity, dimensions vary with season and region.
Influencing factors. Material matters, since crystalline materials generally shrink more than amorphous ones and hygroscopic materials respond strongly to humidity. Part geometry matters, since uneven wall thickness, ribs and large flat areas all distort readily. Moulding process matters through temperature, pressure, holding time and cooling rate. Tooling matters through gate position, cooling channel layout and mould temperature. Ejection and post-processing matter through ejection temperature and whether annealing is applied. And storage conditions matter through temperature and humidity. Uneven wall thickness is the principal geometric cause of warpage: thick and thin sections shrink at different rates, generating internal stress and distortion.
Test methods. Measuring at intervals after ejection produces a curve of dimensional change against time. Measuring after conditioning, having equilibrated at specified temperature and humidity, is what makes data comparable. Measuring at different humidities applies to hygroscopic materials across moisture contents. Measuring after thermal cycling assesses stability after temperature change. Measuring after annealing assesses dimensions once internal stress has relaxed. And measuring after prolonged storage assesses stability months later. Conditioning before measurement is the precondition for comparable dimensional data: dimensions measured at different humidities cannot be compared directly, hygroscopic materials especially.
Assessing internal stress. The annealing method heats the part near its softening temperature for a period and observes the distortion, whose magnitude reflects the internal stress. The chemical method immerses the part in a specific solvent, cracking at stress concentrations and revealing the stress distribution. And the photoelastic method observes stress distribution in transparent parts under polarised light. These reveal the level and distribution of internal stress, which is the root of subsequent distortion and environmental stress cracking.
Design and process responses. Keep wall thickness uniform, avoiding abrupt changes. Control rib proportions relative to the main wall, since thick ribs produce sink marks and internal stress. Use radii to reduce stress concentration. Choose gate positions carefully, since they affect flow and the directionality of shrinkage. Optimise process parameters covering holding, cooling and mould temperature. Apply annealing to precision parts, which relieves internal stress and stabilises dimensions. And pre-condition hygroscopic materials to equilibrium moisture content after moulding. Annealing improves dimensional stability noticeably while adding an operation and cost, suiting parts requiring precision or contacting chemical media.
Relationship to fit and function. Fit dimensions change the tightness of assembly. Seal fits change sealing force. Clearances at moving parts may produce binding or play. Clip interference affects engagement force. And assembly stress changes as dimensions change. Changes in assembly stress relate to environmental stress cracking: dimensional change raises assembly stress, and stress combined with a medium can produce cracking.
How we handle it. For dimensional work on moulded parts we condition specimens as specified before measuring, since unconditioned data are not comparable, hygroscopic materials especially. For dimensional stability assessment we suggest measuring at several times and under several environmental conditions to quantify the change rather than measuring once. Internal stress assessment, whether by annealing or chemical method, is an item we suggest adding, particularly for precision parts and parts contacting cleaning agents, since internal stress is the root of subsequent distortion and cracking.
